Do you pay GST on Silver in Canada?
In Canada, pure silver is generally subject to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) at a rate of 5% or 13%, respectively, depending on the province or territory where the purchase is made. However, there are certain exemptions and special rules that may apply to the purchase of pure silver.
One exemption that may apply is for investment-grade silver bullion, coins, and bars. These items are exempt from GST/HST under section 2 of Part III of Schedule VI to the Excise Tax Act. To qualify for this exemption, the silver must be:
- Refined to a purity of at least 99.5%
- In the form of a bar, ingot, coin, or wafer
- Of a weight accepted in the bullion markets
It's important to note that this exemption only applies to investment-grade silver and not to other forms of silver, such as jewelry or flatware. Also, the exemption only applies if the silver is sold by a dealer registered for GST/HST purposes.
Nugget Stacker ensures that we only sell silver with a purity above 99.5% so that no matter what product you are interested in, there will be no GST added at checkout.
