Gold Outlook... Gold prices are solidly higher in early trading Monday, as the marketplace is jittery following a surprise ratings agency downgrade to U.S. government debt and lingering global trade worries. Moody’s on Friday cut the U.S. credit rating one notch to Aa1 from Aaa, citing the federal government’s ballooning budget deficit and soaring interest payments on the debt. It was the last of the three major credit agencies to downgrade the U.S. from the highest possible rating. Financial markets were also rattled a bit when U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday that President Donald Trump will impose tariffs at the rate he threatened on April 2 if trading partners did not negotiate in "good faith."
-Overall, over the next few months we think gold is a good safe bet considering the downgrade on the United States. It's still a buy-and-hold market.
Silver Outlook...Silver prices held near the $45.2 per ounce mark on Monday, trading in a tight range in the last three sessions but still hovering at a 13% year-to-date gain amid higher demand for silver as bullion and its industrial uses. Precious metals remained supported by the outlook of lower interest rates by major central banks, which reduce the opportunity cost of holding assets without any yield. In the meantime, higher investments in solar panels, the main industrial use for silver, also maintained buying from factories.
-The ratio of paper silver to physical silver, we're seeing something like 378 to 1– well beyond any other futures market for metals.
Golden Space Knowledge..In December 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was launched. Over the last several years, the telescope has produced stunning images that are helping scientists to better understand the universe. Scientists began developing plans for the $10 billion replacement for the Hubble Telescope in 1996. JWST has observed galaxies that appear to have formed just 300–400 million years after the Big Bang, much earlier and more massive than expected. This suggests galaxy formation may have occurred faster and more efficiently than current models predict.
JWST has also identified water vapor, clouds, and haze in the atmospheres of several planets outside of our solar system, and CO2 in the atmosphere of exoplanet WASP-39b. This could pave the way for identifying potential biosignatures in the future. Each of the telescope’s 18 gold-coated, hexagonal mirrors has a diameter of just over 4 feet. Stitched together in a honeycomb pattern, the mirrors have a total diameter of 6.5 meters (21.5 feet). The mirrors are made of beryllium and coated with a microscopic layer of pure gold.
