GOLDEN WAR TREASURE...A military enthusiast bought a tank on eBay recently and discovered $2.5 million of gold bars hidden inside in one of the most unexpected and intriguing places where gold has been found. Nick Mead discovered the five gold bars stashed inside the diesel tank of the ex-Iraqi Army Type 69, a Chinese copy of the Soviet T-55, back in 2017.
-It's believed the bullion was looted by plundering Iraqi soldiers during the 1990 invasion of Kuwait but forgotten about inside the 36.7-ton tank
WEST COAST SALVAGE... No one has laid claim to any of the 4,000 ounces of gold believed to be on board a ship that sank off the Washington coast in 1875 carrying miners and bullion from Victoria to San Francisco. The ship was partly sunk after hitting rocks in the Columbia River in 1861, but was put back into service, ending up on the Victoria to San Francisco route serving B.C.’s short-lived Cassiar Gold Rush.
-An estimated $11 million worth of gold bullion and dust is believed to have gone down with the SS Pacific in the Salish Sea in 1875.
JEWELRY X-RAY...Looking at an X-ray film you might spot fractured bones or even floating foreign objects — but hidden within the film itself there is a tiny amount of silver. Now, The Royal Mint, the UK’s oldest company and official maker of British coins, is using that silver to create jewelry. Each year, more than 50 million metric tons of e-waste is produced globally, with less than 20% recycled worldwide.
-Precious metals valued at $57 billion are being thrown away or forgotten about, instead of being reused.
